The Engineering & Operations Division is comprised of four main departments: Engineering Services, Purchasing and Materials Management, Funded Projects Oversight and the Stony Brook Energy Center Operations. Together, these departments work to support and provide technical services for Stony Brook power plant facilities and the MMWEC site. The Division also provides oversight for MMWEC’s bond-funded Power Supply Projects and assists MMWEC membership with special projects. In addition, the Division provides engineering and procurement services for both the company and its Member systems.

Engineering Services
The Engineering department is responsible for providing the engineering and technical services required for operation and maintenance of the Stony Brook power plant and its associated facilities, including a natural gas pipeline, fuel oil pipeline, and electric transmission facilities. The department provides extensive environmental knowledge and support to MMWEC Member systems in meeting various environmental and regulatory requirements. In addition, the department provides Members with technical support of special projects.

Engineering Services also is responsible for the development and maintenance of safety programs to comply with applicable regulatory requirements. Staff coordinates training programs to ensure employees and contractors are knowledgeable and proficient in all safety requirements.

The Engineering Services department also is responsible for oversight of the Maintenance department. The Maintenance staff coordinates and maintains the MMWEC Administrative Office Building, company vehicles, roads, and grounds.

Purchasing and Materials Management
The Purchasing and Materials Management department manages corporate purchases and materials for the Stony Brook power plant and administrative office building. The department provides a full range of procurement and inventory management services, including contract labor acquisition and management. The department also assists MMWEC Members with the procurement process of special projects.

MMWEC Funded Projects Oversight
This function of the Engineering & Operations Division involves the oversight of MMWEC’s joint ownership interests in various generating facilities, with the purpose being to ensure that such facilities are operated as economically and efficiently as possible, and in the best interests of MMWEC’s Power Supply Project Participants.

Stony Brook Energy Center (SBEC) Operations
SBEC staff operates and maintains all of the Stony Brook power plant facilities and partners with the MMWEC Power Supply Division in bidding the plant into the wholesale power marketplace to maximize its value.
