| The MMWEC power supply includes MMWEC-owned
capacity in five major New England power plants:
· Stony Brook Intermediate Unit
· Stony Brook Peaking Unit
· Seabrook Station
· Millstone Unit No. 3
· Wyman Unit No. 4
The MMWEC-owned capacity and energy from
these plants is resold at MMWEC’s cost to 28 Massachusetts
municipal utilities, the Pascoag (Rhode Island) Utility District
and six utilities in Vermont. MMWEC also purchases power in bulk
through bilateral contracts with power suppliers and resells the
power at cost to participating utilities.
Seabrook Station is a 1,150-megawatt
nuclear generating plant located in Seabrook, New Hampshire. An
operating license for Seabrook was issued in 1986, but the plant
did not begin commercial operation until 1990. The principal owner
and operator of Seabrook Station is FPL Energy Seabrook, LLC,
an indirect subsidiary of Florida-based FPL Group, Inc. FPL Energy
Seabrook owns 88.2% of Seabrook Station. The other owners are
MMWEC (11.59%) and two Massachusetts municipal utilities, the
Taunton Municipal Lighting Plant (0.1%) and the Hudson Light &
Power Department (0.08%).
FPL Group is pursuing plans to increase
the capacity of Seabrook Station by approximately 100 megawatts
and has announced plans to seek an extension of its Seabrook operating
license, from the current license expiration date of 2026, to
2050.
MMWEC’s Seabrook Project Participants include 28 Massachusetts
municipal utilities based in the communities of Ashburnham, Boylston,
Braintree, Danvers, Georgetown, Groton, Hingham, Holden, Holyoke,
Hudson, Hull, Ipswich, Littleton, Mansfield, Marblehead, Middleborough,
Middleton, North Attleborough, Paxton, Peabody, Reading, Shrewsbury,
South Hadley, Sterling, Templeton, Wakefield, West Boylston and
