History/Ownership
Millstone Unit 3, which began operation in 1986, is the newest and largest of Millstone Station’s three nuclear units, one of which is retired from service. The principal owner and operator of Millstone Station is Dominion Nuclear Connecticut, Inc., a subsidiary of Virginia-based Dominion Resources, Inc. Dominion Nuclear Connecticut owns 93.47% of Millstone Unit NO. 3. The other owners are MMWEC (4.8%) and Central Vermont Public Service Corporation (1.73%).
Licensing/Project Participants
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Nov. 28, 2005 approved Dominion Nuclear Connecticut’s request for a 20-year operating license extension for Millstone’s Unit 3 reactor. The license now expires in Nov. 2045.
MMWEC’s Millstone Unit 3 Project Participants include 27 Massachusetts municipal utilities based in the communities of Ashburnham, Boylston, Danvers, Georgetown, Groton, Hingham, Holden, Holyoke, Hudson, Hull, Ipswich, Littleton, Mansfield, Marblehead, Middleborough, Middleton, North Attleborough, Paxton, Peabody, Reading, Shrewsbury, South Hadley, Sterling, Templeton, Wakefield, West Boylston and Westfield.
